  • Marvin and Allison Pritts donated 16 acres on Cold Springs Road for Ulysses' first public park and youth sports fields, and the town board unanimously approved the gift on Aug. 27+local groups like Taughannock Soccer Club welcomed the move while some residents voiced concerns over parking and area changes.  Tompkins Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Cornell’s experimental vineyard in Portland, sensors and drones collect data to help researchers and growers manage crops with precision—this free web platform turns field data into maps that guide targeted care for vineyards in New York and Pennsylvania.   • Scientists from Cornell developed tiny magnetic particles that self-assemble like living cells fix mistakes — the team used a rotating magnetic field to help the panels build into the correct shape, raising their yield from 50% to 95% and published their work on Aug. 29 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Law scholar Aziz Rana from Boston College will discuss the U.S. Constitution and democratic backsliding during the Kops Freedom of the Press Lecture on Sept. 8 from 12-1 p.m. at 106 White Hall – his talk will explain how constitutional veneration has influenced civil liberties.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Newfield schools superintendent Jesse Harper announced a new traffic pattern for drop-off and pickup that will begin with the 2025-26 school year—vehicles will use designated routes at both the elementary and middle/high school zones and students will exit from the passenger side for safety. The change is part of a $21 million capital project and extra signage and staff will guide drivers during the first weeks after school starts September 4.  Tompkins Weekly

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tompkins County's legislature finalized a temporary relocation plan for government departments preparing for the Center of Government project, with some offices already moving to new addresses after public feedback. The county also approved an Artificial Intelligence usage policy and set aside 2025 budget funds to support local housing studies and infrastructure improvements—steps aimed at saving costs and boosting service access.  Ithaca.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Centralus Health said that Robert Lawlis will be the new CEO starting November 7. Martin Stallone will leave his role to work at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield as executive vice president and chief healthcare services officer starting December 1—he helped build Centralus Health from a merger.  Ithaca.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The City of Ithaca Planning and Development Review Board approved a five-story senior housing building at 205-217 W. State St.—a project by Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services that will offer 56 affordable units and a daycare. The project may break ground by the end of next year if tax credits and grants are secured and will include energy-efficient design and inclusive community features.  Tompkins Weekly

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Ithaca women’s soccer team starts the season with new players stepping in to fill gaps left by key scorers who graduated — coach Mindy Quigg said the Bombers will work hard to win the Liberty League championship. They won two non-conference games and will face Vassar College on September 27 in league play.  The Ithacan
  • The Mets beat the Tigers 10-8 on Monday with Juan Soto hitting a grand slam and will face Detroit at 6:40 p.m. tonight while the Yankees begin a series in Houston at 8:10 p.m.; the Binghamton Rumble Ponies will visit Akron at 6:35 p.m. tonight—Cornell men's soccer will blank Le Moyne 3-0 on Saturday, Cornell women's soccer will tie Kent State 1-1 on Sunday, and Ithaca College women's soccer will beat Elmira 2-0 on Friday and Heidelberg 1-0 on Sunday.  607 News Now
