COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Danby resident Zachary Larkins is leading an effort to turn an old highway shelter at 15 Bald Hill Rd. into a covered skate park with a small halfpipe—following Town Board approval for an engineering study, local residents have shown strong support and will help fundraise for future improvements.  Tompkins Weekly
  • IthacaTrails.org has redesigned its website to offer a mobile-friendly guide with 75 trails featuring maps, photos and detailed trail information for Tompkins County. Local officials say the update will help residents and visitors quickly find options for hiking, biking, paddling or skiing—boosting outdoor recreation.  Ithaca.com
  • Tompkins County and the American Red Cross will host a community blood drive on Sept. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Whole Health building at 55 Brown Rd as part of the Airport Day and Preparedness Expo to keep hospitals supplied with needed blood.  Tompkins Weekly
  • Local volunteers hosted Busking for Justice at Café DeWitt on September 5 to raise funds for legal aid and bail for wrongfully detained immigrants—70 people attended and $1,400 was raised. The event, organized by Jayne Demakos '78 and local musicians, will continue on Oct. 3 and Dec. 5 to support the cause further.  The Ithacan

  • Ithaca College student bands awdam and All Nine Bite marked the summer by preparing new EP releases—All Nine Bite released its EP 'Bordering States' on Aug. 28 while awdam is set to release its EP 'You Win!' in November after recording with local support.   • Popcorn Premieres returned on September 10 with cohosts Logan Thompson and Dylan Long who talked about the 2025 summer movie slate—sharing which films they liked and which they did not—and offering clear insights into the season's films.  The Ithacan

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jesse Eisenberg will visit Ithaca College on Sept. 15 as a Park Distinguished Visitor — he spoke by phone about how his college experience shaped his film career — and will share creative insights with students.  The Ithacan
  • Claudia Goldin, a Nobel Prize winner in economics, will return to campus to give the 2025 Staller Lecture titled Why Women Won on Sept. 25 in Rockefeller Hall’s Schwarz Auditorium from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.—she will explain how society's views of discrimination and expanded rights have changed over time.   • Ithaca City School District's board voted 5 to 4 on Sept. 9 to extend superintendent Luvelle Brown's contract so it will end with his retirement on June 30, 2029; community members opposed the change while board members argued stable leadership is needed amid teacher contract disputes and enrollment challenges—sparking sharp local debate.  The Ithaca Voice
  • On September 10th, ten faculty received Louis H. Zalaznick Teaching Assistantships awarding funds from $1500 to $3000 to expand courses, research, and support roles at Entrepreneurship at Cornell. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tompkins County Administration recommended a 2026 budget of $240 million and presented the first draft to county legislators on September 2—officials plan increased taxes amid a tight budget and uncertain state and federal funding. HEALTH NEWS

  • Tompkins County Whole Health informed the community about new COVID-19 vaccine guidelines following Gov. Hochul’s executive order on Sept. 5 that allowed doctors, nurse practitioners and pharmacists to prescribe vaccines for those aged 3 and older—infants must be vaccinated by a primary care provider. Residents can now request a prescription at local healthcare providers or pharmacies, with additional vaccine services available at clinics and through in-home care.  Tompkins Weekly
