COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Love Living at Home received a $25,000 grant from Assemblymember Anna Kelles' office to expand the David Sprague Sponsored Member Fund and provide free membership to up to 60 low-income seniors, giving them access to over 500 annual events and volunteer services. The organization will host a Tompkins County Trivia Fundraiser on Oct. 30 at Hopshire Farms and Brewery—featuring a recognition ceremony from 4:30 to 5 p.m. and themed trivia competitions.  Tompkins Weekly

BUSINESS NEWS

  • FOSAI, a Cornell-led space tech startup that built systems for defense and space, has been acquired by Pasteur Labs—an AI firm making simulation tools. The merger will combine both companies' skills to boost testing in aerospace and other fields.  Cornell Chronicle

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Cornell-led study found that high earners did not move for tax breaks because they value feeling at home more than saving money; researchers used IRS data from nearly 4 million tax filings during the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act changes and the pandemic. The study shows that disruptions like remote work made social ties more important than tax incentives—especially in high-tax areas like New York.  Cornell Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Researchers at Cornell developed a new chip design called Double Duty that lets parts of FPGAs work separately—improving efficiency with over 20% less space used and nearly 10% better performance to lower energy needs for AI and data centers. The work earned a Best Paper Award at a recent conference and may boost efficiency in devices from network cards to medical machines.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Seven candidates for Common Council gathered Sept. 4 at Tompkins County Public Library to explain their views on housing, public safety and economic growth—five council seats are in play and three candidates run unopposed, each offering different ideas to improve local conditions.  Ithaca.com
  • At the Tompkins County Legislature meeting on Sept. 2nd, county officials presented the recommended 2026 budget with a $240 million operating plan, a 4.5% tax levy increase meant to raise $57 million, and an estimated $2.5 million gap for critical services—department presentations will start on Sept. 4th and a public forum is set for Sept. 30th.  Ithaca.com
  • The Town of Ithaca’s Planning Board will review Cornell University’s proposal for a large-bird rehabilitation aviary on Tuesday, Sept. 16—located adjacent to the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital on Hungerford Hill Road in Eastern Heights. The nearly 7,000-square-foot facility includes five patient mews and a shared flight area to help injured raptors recover before release.  The Ithaca Voice
  • Cornell University Police Chief Anthony Bellamy is retiring after 21 years and will join the Ithaca Police Department as deputy chief on Oct. 2. He aims to build partnerships and will report to Chief Tom Kelly following an announcement on Sept. 12.  607 News Now
