COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Starting on Oct. 23, Cayuga Health and Foodnet Meals on Wheels will launch a weekly dining program at The Shops at Ithaca Mall for seniors 60 and older. Doors open at 11 a.m. with lunch served from 12 to 12:30 p.m.—participants must register by calling Foodnet by 3 p.m. Tuesday before each meal, and donations are welcome.  The Ithaca Voice

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Physics professor Robert Thorne’s company MiTeGen celebrated 20 years in business and its 25th patent — it makes custom tools that help scientists study small parts. The company designs systems for labs using crystallography and electron microscopy — its products work in fields from cell biology to art restoration.  Cornell Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • A Cornell study finds that liberals and conservatives support censoring children’s books when the content offends their political views—showing that an issue once agreed upon has now split along partisan lines. The research surveyed more than 800 people and highlights how cancel culture is reshaping debates over free speech.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Today, the Cornell Swift Club is holding an album release party at Willard Straight Hall as Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, drops at midnight—students enjoy snacks, raffles, trivia and a costume contest while building a welcoming fan community.  Cornell Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • In the Ithaca City School District, a state law required students to store smartphones in non-locking Velcro pouches starting Sept. 4—student surveys show that while phone use during class has significantly declined, many still keep devices in their pockets or backpacks.  The Ithaca Voice
  • Nobel Prize-winning economist Richard Thaler will speak on campus on October 17 at 4 p.m. in Statler Auditorium (Statler Hall) for a free conversation with Thomas Gilovich about his work in behavioral economics, hosted by the College of Arts and Sciences and the SC Johnson College of Business.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Ithaca teachers and union leaders have returned to the bargaining table after nearly four months without a contract, and negotiations resume after a lengthy pause. Local Families and Children’s Services of Ithaca will end its auxiliary mental health programs for vulnerable children—citing federal funding cuts as the reason.  The Ithaca Voice

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kathy Hochul banned outdoor fires across New York on Oct. 2 due to dry conditions—this ban on burning brush, debris, cooking and campfires will expire on Oct. 15. Small, contained fires are still allowed.  Ithaca Journal
  • The City of Ithaca Planning and Development Board approved a redevelopment at 215 College Ave that will replace a two-story house with a seven-story building featuring 91 apartments and a rooftop terrace. Board members required a noise reduction plan for the rooftop along with strict work hours to address neighbor concerns.  Ithaca.com
  • State Senator Lea Webb urges District 52 residents to share their concerns about NYSEG's proposed double-digit rate hikes—public hearings will be held at Binghamton City Hall on October 7 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and at Ithaca Town Hall on October 8 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a virtual meeting on October 21 and comments accepted until October 24.  607 News Now

  • Investigators at Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell’s Ithaca campus received a $5.1 million NIH grant to launch the Autism Replication, Validation, and Reproducibility Center. The three-year project will use past research data and a community advisory board—featuring policymakers, researchers, and parents—to improve the trust and reliability of autism research.  Cornell Chronicle
  • After slowing for a week, COVID is rising again locally—Tompkins cases jumped from 12 to 46 per 100,000 while Tioga and Seneca remained steady and Cortland reached the highest rate statewide.  14850
