ECONOMY NEWS

  • Job seekers in Tompkins County will meet over 30 local employers at the 29th Annual Skills Job Fair at Hotel Ithaca from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on October 22nd—attendees can also enter a raffle to win a laptop donated by Finger Lakes Independence Center.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Cornell study finds that STEM professors are sharing more active learning lesson plans to boost student learning after concerns in the classroom. The team analyzed articles from 2000 to 2022 and noted a sharp rise after 2013 — the research is funded by NSF and shows ripple effects as plans are downloaded worldwide.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell CALS welcomed 20 new faculty this fall to boost its work in purpose-driven science that improves lives in New York and beyond—adding strength to its approach for solving complex challenges.  Cornell Chronicle
  • IC Paint and Sip hosts bi-weekly Tuesday events that let students sit down, paint, and have a drink while making new friends at Ithaca College. This regular session gives attendees a chance to explore their creativity and connect with peers.  The Ithacan

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from Cornell and Donana Biological Station found that birds on four continents use a similar whining call when they spot parasitic birds near their nests — the study in Nature Ecology and Evolution shows that the call blends an innate reaction with a learned warning that may explain steps in language evolution.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Today, two farms in the Owasco Lake Watershed will benefit from nearly $2.5 million in state funding from the Tompkins County Soil and Water Conservation District—funds that will buy new equipment and build infrastructure to reduce nutrient-rich runoff and recycle silage leachate for irrigation. The projects include a manure collection channel with a pumping station and transfer line to a new storage facility and are part of a broader $25 million state effort to improve water quality.  607 News Now
  • A report released Oct. 3 by a global commission showed that changes in food production and consumption could cut food-related greenhouse gas emissions by more than half. Cornell researchers ran simulations for 2050 — showing that sustainable practices like reducing food waste and protecting ecosystems can ease pressure on planetary boundaries.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Maryland based tech company TeraWulf secured an 80 year lease to build an AI data center on the site of the old Cayuga power station along Cayuga Lake in Lansing as the town board postponed the moratorium vote until October 15th due to community concerns about the environment and rising utility costs. TeraWulf said it will break ground within the next year and have part of the center running in 2026—residents and local officials remain divided on the plan.  The Ithacan
  • Tompkins County announced a new Amplify grant that offers up to $5,500 for grassroots projects, nonprofits, or small businesses to drive local change using funds from the 2025 budget. The grant application opened Sept. 16 and ends Oct. 15, and recipients will be announced at the GARE Local Meeting in Ithaca from Oct. 20—22.  Ithaca.com
  • Ithaca Mayor Cantelmo set up a five-member citizen advisory committee—tasked with reviewing elected official pay—to study the salaries of the mayor and councilors. The group will compare current pay with local standards and hold a public hearing before submitting its report.  Ithaca Journal

  • Local breweries, cideries, and wineries in the 607 area are introducing fall drinks like pumpkin ales and crisp ciders that match the season's change. Popular spots—such as Wagner Valley Brewing & Vineyards, Finger Lakes Cider House, Keuka Brewing Company, Grist Iron Brewing, Cortland Beer Company, Liquid State Brewing, and Trumansburg wineries—invite visitors to enjoy these seasonal flavors.  607 News Now
