BUSINESS NEWS

  • TeraWulf Inc. signed an 80-year deal for 183 acres of the old Cayuga Power Plant in Lansing to build a data center that will use high-power computers for AI and other tasks. Local leaders worry the project may use up to 400 megawatts—more than four times Tompkins County’s usual power—while TeraWulf says most energy will come from clean sources.  Ithaca.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A federal judge dismissed an antitrust lawsuit on September 25 against Cornell and 39 colleges that was filed last October by alumni Eileen Chang and Maxwell Hanse—ruling the schools did not share information when using College Board data to set student aid policies.  607 News Now
  • A panel on media literacy, free speech — and the state of the free press was held on October 5 at South Hill Cider at 550 Sandbank Rd in Ithaca from 6-8 p.m. Local experts from Ithaca College, Cornell and other groups discussed how to spot news bias and the role of an independent press, with organizers also planning related events for Banned Books Week.  14850

HEALTH NEWS

  • Eight Ithaca College students contracted hand, foot and mouth disease in September on campus—Student Health Services reported fewer than five cases were treated at the Hammond Health Center and urged students with a fever to stay home until they are fever-free for 24 hours without medication.  The Ithacan

  • Twelve athletes from Ithaca, Corning, Waverly, Horseheads, Sus Valley, M-E, Walton/Downsville, CV, TAE, Whitney Point, END and Owego are nominated for Guthrie Athlete of the Week for Sept. 28-Oct. 4. Voting closes at noon Thursday, Oct. 9 and last week’s winner from Corning, Paisley Emmick, earned 59.3% of 32,353 votes—indicating a competitive field.  Ithaca Journal
  • Ithaca College grad Dennis Ryan finished the men's race at the Guthrie Wineglass Marathon in 2:25:23, and Sayre resident Sadie James won the women's division in 2:48:58.
