COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local artists and creatives met Thursday, October 9 at CAP ArtSpace in the Tompkins Center for History & Culture —110 North Tioga Street— from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Registration was required to help organizers plan for space and refreshments.  14850

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ithaca College hosts both formal ensembles and student bands that play at campus concerts and community festivals, and local school districts and government are urged to provide stable funding for dedicated practice spaces—supporting academic, social, and emotional growth for students and locals.  The Ithacan

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Ithaca College’s Faculty Council meeting on Oct. 7, staff learned their health insurance premiums will increase by between $1.03 and $88.76 per month starting Jan. 1, 2026. Council members also discussed new software for faculty and students—such as Canva Enterprise and Adobe Express—and plans to add micro-credential programs while welcoming new council members and reviewing the accreditation process for an upcoming visit in March.  The Ithacan
  • The Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance continues its Explore Finger Lakes Annual Scholarship with a $2,500 award for learners pursuing higher education or professional certification in tourism and hospitality—eligible applicants from the 14-county region must apply by November 15th. The award will be presented at an industry gathering on December 12th at Seasons on Keuka at the Hampton Inn Penn Yan.  607 News Now
  • The Ithaca College Student Governance Council met on Oct. 6 to review the appropriations committee financial report and discuss budget cutbacks as well as the potential new AI major in computer science. Junior Juno Brooks noted that funding levels remained similar to last year while members raised concerns about student employment hours and AI classroom use, with further details expected on Oct. 20.  The Ithacan
  • At Ithaca College, first-year students got a clear path into the band scene when a Band Mixer on Sept. 18 connected them with experienced musicians — the IC Live Music Fanclub will host Disco Volante on Oct. 17 to give new bands a chance to perform. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Manager Deborah Mohlenoff presented the proposed 2026 budget of over $112 million — a $6.1 million increase from 2025 — to help slow property tax growth while covering rising costs from inflation and higher health insurance expenses. City Council will review budget amendments in meetings on Oct. 7, Oct. 8, Oct. 14, Oct. 15, and on Oct. 21–22 before a vote scheduled for Nov. 5.  The Ithaca Voice

HEALTH NEWS

  • Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women and local doctors at Cayuga Health say women aged 40 and older should get a mammogram every six months for early detection. The center uses low-dose 3D imaging that takes less than 45 minutes—catching cancer early offers more treatment options and may help avoid invasive procedures.  607 News Now
  • Cayuga Health and Foodnet Meals on Wheels have partnered to launch a weekly Community Dining lunch — starting Oct 23 at The Shops at Ithaca Mall — that provides nutritious meals and social connection for adults aged 60 and older; guests must register by calling Foodnet by 3:00 p.m. on the Tuesday before each meal.  Tompkins Weekly

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Today, Cornell University plans to purchase the Breazzano Center for Education at 209-215 Dryden Road in Collegetown—replacing its long-term lease with developers while keeping the current PILOT agreement approved by the Tompkins County Industrial Development Authority. The six-story building will help lower operating costs and maintain critical academic space near campus.  The Ithaca Voice
