BUSINESS NEWS

  • TeraWulf announced plans for a data center in Lansing that will redevelop 180 acres of the old Cayuga coal plant site and promise 100 permanent jobs with tax relief as the project builds out until 2029. Some residents remain wary of changes to the cooling system and water use—town officials will review detailed plans at meetings on Oct. 15 and Oct. 27.  Tompkins Weekly

  • Hosts Christopher Meadows and Mateo Berman-Sample discussed Gotham City's Dark Knight films including Batman (1989), Batman Begins (2005), The LEGO Batman Movie (2017) and The Batman (2022), explaining how the hero uses fear to outsmart his well-known villains.  The Ithacan

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On October 9, teachers met at Ithaca High School to resume contract talks with the school district after a pause since June. They presented 11 proposals including a new salary schedule, better health care, more family leave, and safeguards against AI work outsourcing—district leaders said they will return next week with a counter-offer while some union members remain doubtful.  14850
  • Cornell professors Greg Fuchs and Thomas Hartman were elected as fellows of the American Physical Society on Oct. 10 for their work in advancing quantum science and engineering — Fuchs was recognized for his studies on electron spins while Hartman was honored for his research on black holes.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Andrew Owens—new faculty at Cornell Tech and Cornell Bowers— is developing AI that learns like humans by watching, listening and feeling. His research will shape robotics and misinformation detection as machines become more intuitive and autonomous.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Cornell study published Oct. 10 said that starting emissions cuts soon is key to stopping ice melt and rising seas. The research shows that delaying cuts until after 2050 will increase flood risks and may force tougher decisions for future planning.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Volunteers of America Upstate New York was approved by the Tompkins County Legislature Tuesday to run the county’s emergency cold-weather shelter at Cherry Street, where renovations are expected to finish in November at a cost of about $100,000. The agency will provide a warming center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and overnight shelter at a seasonal cost of approximately $2.3 million — state funds cover about $2 million while the county pays the remaining $300,000.  The Ithaca Voice

  • Hospicare and Palliative Care Services of Ithaca now uses music, art, and pet therapy to help patients feel calm and less lonely during tough times. The programs ease stress and lower anxiety while offering moments of joy — they support both the body and mind.  607 News Now

  • The Giants silenced critics with a 34-17 win over Philadelphia on Thursday as quarterback Jaxson Dart noted that the defense held the game scoreless in the second half—Jets will fly to London to face the Broncos Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Local sports action continues as Ithaca College will try to extend its win streak when it visits St. Lawrence Saturday at 1 p.m.  607 News Now
