BUSINESS NEWS

  • Recent $3 billion private investments have spurred dairy processors to seek more workers—entry-level positions offer $22-23 an hour with full benefits and retirement plans. Cornell is providing extension trainings and bootcamps to help job seekers break into the dairy industry—aiming to meet the increased demand for skilled labor.  Cornell Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cornell Cinema in Willard Straight Hall will show a documentary about Nobel Laureate Phil Sharp on Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. The film—sponsored by the Cornell Institute of Biotechnology—explores Sharp’s 1977 RNA splicing discovery and its impact on biotechnology.  Cornell Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cheng Chen joined Ithaca College as a new assistant professor in the Department of Art, Art History and Architecture—he teaches Architecture Across Cultures and will complete his doctorate in December. He plans to enrich his classes with a multicultural approach and a passion for the outdoors.  The Ithacan
  • On Oct. 10, Ithaca College celebrated the silver anniversary of its Bachelor of Arts in Writing in the Business School Upper Atrium — marking 25 years of the program — as current and retired faculty gathered to reflect on its 53-year history — a legacy that began with six part-time teachers. Founding member Barbara Adams and professor Jacob White discussed how the department evolved into a comprehensive program that now equips students with diverse writing skills.  The Ithacan
  • Neuroscientist Azahara Oliva was named a Packard Fellow and got $875,000 for five years to test new ideas for her research—she is one of 20 early-career scientists chosen to help solve tough problems. Her work studies how brain states help animals move and think.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell Food Connections—a Cornell-led program—teaches New York food educators and producers to meet modern food safety standards and develop new products. It began with workshops in May and October and will hold its final session Oct 27–28 while more sessions are planned for 2026.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell physicists and computer scientists have developed a new machine learning architecture called QuAN—using quantum snapshots as tokens to study complex interactions among particles and reduce noise in experimental data. The work was described in Science Advances on Oct. 10 and may help advance quantum computing research.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New York’s 2025 fall foliage report shows most areas in the Southern Tier are either at or nearing peak fall colors by Oct. 21. In Tompkins County, Ithaca and Trumansburg have reached peak hues—observers report a bright mix of orange and red leaves.  Ithaca Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tonight, temperatures will dip below freezing—Tompkins County has activated Code Blue protocols to assist anyone needing shelter; residents should visit or call the Department of Social Services in Ithaca before 4:30 p.m. and use non-emergency dispatch after that time.  607 News Now
  • Residents at Ithaca Town Hall last week opposed NYSEG’s plan to raise electricity delivery rates by 35% and natural gas rates by nearly 40% and to close its Dryden Road office—many feel that rising bills and poor service have hurt families and fixed-income customers. The Public Service Commission will hold two virtual hearings on Oct.21, and comments must be submitted by Oct.17.  The Ithaca Voice

  • First-year student Raya Mount from Trumansburg joined the Ithaca College cross-country team after her high school coach recommended the change from basketball and soccer — she quickly adjusted her training under coach Erin Dinan and has shown promise as she builds her endurance.
