ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A catastrophic water main break on South Aurora St between Hudson St and Prospect St on Saturday caused part of the road to collapse and led the city to close the block as repair crews begin work on Monday with road repairs to follow—detours are posted.  WENY

  • On October 24, 11 vehicles will be auctioned in Ithaca—one event at Ryan's Towing on Elmira Road at 10 a.m. and a second at Charlie's Towing on 5th Street at 10:45 a.m., with sales accepting cash, cashier’s check or certified check.  607 News Now
  • Angelhearts Donuts has reopened at 110 West Green Street — near Press Bay Alley — after closing its previous diner at 401 East State Street after six years and now serves sweet treats, espresso, breakfast and lunch while operating Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  607 News Now

  • Two Cornell graduate students earned top honors at SRF2025 in Tokyo—Nicole Verboncoeur won 1st Prize for measuring superconducting material limits and Jake Parsons received 2nd Prize for designing a cryomodule cooled without liquid helium.  Cornell Chronicle
  • On Oct 18, alumni from Alpha Phi Alpha’s Alpha chapter opened the House of Alpha Leadership Institute at 105 Westbourne Lane in Cornell Heights—dedicating a student residence built on the fraternity's founding values. The event honored their long legacy with speeches by key figures such as Robert F. Smith, who donated funds and started a $20-million drive to support the institute.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cass R. Sunstein — a Harvard professor and former White House official — will lead a discussion on free expression at American universities when he delivers the Konvitz Memorial Lecture on Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. in Landis Auditorium at Myron Taylor Hall, and the public is welcome to attend without registration.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new book by ILR School researchers examines how U.S. labor and immigration policies create poor working conditions and disrespect for low-wage immigrant workers of color. The book argues that reforms in labor and employment laws could improve workplace dignity and security while showcasing creative responses from workers — even in challenging environments.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Tompkins County approved a contract with Volunteers of America to run the code blue shelter at 227 Cherry St. in Ithaca, which provides warm shelter during cold weather with daily operations from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. and drop-in hours as needed; the agreement covers the 2025—2026 season and follows the decision to forgo a joint shelter and navigation hub with the City of Ithaca while planning for a permanent facility.  WENY
  • Ithaca is inviting residents, local business owners and commuters to give ideas for the final phase of its Move Ithaca Active Transportation Plan — a project using crash data and public feedback to make biking and walking safer. A virtual workshop is scheduled for October 28 at 3:30 p.m. to review five key locations.  607 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at CHESS used high-pressure X-ray scattering to study how nucleosomes, the structures that pack DNA, respond under stress. The experiment revealed that centromeric nucleosomes held their shape better than conventional ones — a sign they may protect our genetic material more effectively.  Cornell Chronicle
