CULTURE NEWS

  • Ithaca College students will perform international songs — including tunes from Peru, Cuba, Russia and the United States — at Ford Hall today at 7 p.m. Admission is free.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Five university professors will debate which academic discipline should be saved for the future in the annual Apocalypse Debate sponsored by Logos at 5 p.m. on Nov. 6 in Room G01 of Uris Hall—each argues that their field is most essential for preserving knowledge.  Cornell Chronicle
  • On Oct. 17, MDpanel CEO Jason Erdell ’95 spoke at Cornell’s Mei-Mei Wei and Amy Cheng Distinguished Lecture Series to explain how AI will change work and encouraged students to build diverse skills—he compared the tech boom to the early days of the internet—and stressed the need for lifelong learning.  Cornell Chronicle
  • On Oct. 24, Cornell University President Michael I. Kotlikoff said in Call Auditorium that education and research are vital for preparing students for the future—he mentioned that government actions on funding and discrimination concerns have slowed some research, and he stressed that Cornell will work in good faith to resolve these issues while protecting free inquiry.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tompkins County officials activated the Code Blue shelter program for Sunday night because the National Weather Service forecasts Ithaca temperatures to drop to around freezing with wind chills below 32° for two or more hours—those needing shelter can contact the Department of Social Services at 320 West MLK/State Street.  14850

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Zumper report shows Ithaca rental prices increased 10% from last year's median of $2,187, with the typical apartment now at $2,400 in September + one-bedroom rates rising to $1,750 from $1,595 while two-bedroom rents stayed nearly flat from last month but saw a 16% jump from last year.  Ithaca Journal
