CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Academy Award-winning documentary No Other Land will be shown in Ithaca on November 8 at 6 p.m. (doors 5:30) at the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts Film Forum and on November 9 at 4 p.m. (doors 3:30) at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center. The film follows the struggle in the West Bank and is promoted by local groups to spark community dialogue on justice and coexistence. 14850

- ➤ Michael I. Kotlikoff was inaugurated as Cornell’s 15th president on Oct. 24 in Barton Hall after a dinner for trustees, council members and guests. He pledged to lead the university in addressing future challenges in open inquiry and equal opportunity—values highlighted by university leaders during the event. Cornell Chronicle
- ➤ Cornell University hosted the fourth Cornell Sports Research Conference from October 23-25, where students and experts shared their sports research including Ithaca College junior Ryan Kane’s unique sports photography presentation — the event also featured talks by Cornell alumni that highlighted a growing connection between academic work and athletic innovation. - ➤ Newly published digital collections at Cornell University Library showcase materials from Ithaca House Press records, historic maps of campus growth, and early engineering lantern slides—digitized from Rare and Manuscript Collections for free online access. - ➤ Cornell University Library added nearly 765,000 digitized titles to HathiTrust Digital Library, which reached 19 million books after the October 22nd deposit—this batch includes texts in Dutch, German, Mandarin, Laotian and Thai as well as a detailed record of Ithaca weather from 1920 to 43. - ➤ Cornell researchers used super-resolution reaction imaging to study palladium-hydrogen intermediates and see how hydrogen atoms move—this insight could boost hydrogen production and help clean water of pollutants, while the work published Oct. 27 shows catalysts behave differently at the nanoscale. - ➤ Family forest owners with at least 30 acres can join the Family Forest Carbon Program to earn annual payments for managing their woods; local foresters explain the program helps capture and store carbon—supporting better forest health and reducing greenhouse gases. 607 News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Due to the government shutdown that began Oct. 1, SNAP benefits in Tompkins County will be delayed this November while HEAP benefits will not start until November 17—federal food aid will also not be distributed on Nov. 1. 607 News Now
- ➤ Kat Savage began serving as interim director of the Tompkins County Public Library on Oct. 13, replacing Susan Currie after her three-month term ended. She will support the staff + work with the Finger Lakes Library System while the Board of Trustees searches for a permanent director. Ithaca.com
- ➤ The Tompkins County Workforce Diversity and Inclusion Committee is accepting nominations for its second annual Leslyn McBean-Clairborne Strength in Diversity Award, with entries due November 9 for individuals or organizations that excel in diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. Chair Veronica Pillar said the award will honor strong community leadership—reflecting the county's ongoing commitment to equity. Tompkins County
