COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank of the Southern Tier said it is ready to help local families stretch their groceries as SNAP benefits remain delayed due to a federal court order. Families can use its new interactive map—covering food pantries and meal programs in Broome, Tioga, Chemung, Steuben, Schuyler, and Tompkins counties—to find food assistance before Thanksgiving.  WENY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Twenty startup finalists will pitch their food and agriculture businesses to win up to $1 million at the Grow-NY Summit, which will run Nov. 12—13 at Hotel Canandaigua. Sixteen finalists worked with a Cornell expert to model each venture's regional economic impact and job creation potential ahead of the awards ceremony.  Cornell Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Food of the Original People returns to Morrison Dining today — a joint effort by Cornell Dining, the American Indian and Indigenous Studies Program and Cornell Botanic Gardens — to honor Indigenous culinary traditions. ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Oven Fresh Jobs Live Job Fair will be held tomorrow, November 5, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Shops at Ithaca Mall — local employers from healthcare, education, government, media and more will offer job opportunities and prizes.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cornell Translator Interpreter Program is hosting its first symposium, 'The Future of Language Advocacy,' on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in room G10 at the Biotech Building—founded by Fatema Sumar and Joyce Muchan in 2000 to address local language needs—; the free event requires pre-registration and will highlight the program's 25 years of service.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Former Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla and Afghan human rights activist Zarifa Ghafari led a discussion on the future of democracy today at Cornell's Brooks School of Public Policy as part of the Nixon Fellows Program— they urged active participation and stressed that listening is key to keeping democracy strong. Moderated by Professor Rachel Riedl, the event highlighted the need for everyday civic work to shape better government.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell Engineering's Baja Racing team built on past successes with three first-place finishes last season and is now testing new ideas on its off-road car for future races. The team of about 60 students works together—teaching each other and refining their design for better performance.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell researchers and their team developed a neural implant as small as a grain of salt that recorded brain activity from mice for more than a year. The device uses infrared laser beams to power a semiconductor diode and send data wirelessly—an advance that may lead to less intrusive brain studies in the future.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On October 28, the Ithaca Planning & Development Board approved plans for a new four-story cream-colored community center on Cornell’s West Campus to serve the Jewish student organization Grinspoon Hillel, and it will be located across from Alice Cook House on University Avenue.  607 News Now
  • On October 22, Cornell held a debate at Goldwin Smith Hall where faculty discussed if U.S. foreign aid should change after an executive order froze funds—some argued for support of international public goods while others warned it could favor donor interests over recipients. The discussion set the stage for a yearlong conversation that includes a planned lecture by former USAID administrator Samantha Power in April.  Cornell Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar hosted its first AI Hackathon on Oct. 10-11 that brought med and computer science students together to develop AI tools for clinical challenges. Six teams worked on projects like breast cancer prediction and early depression detection—'Federated Nomads' won for their clinical risk tool.  Cornell Chronicle

SPORTS NEWS

  • Cornell football extended its win streak to three when it came back from a 14—point deficit to beat Princeton 20—17 on Saturday, while Ithaca College beat Buffalo State 49—7 and SUNY Cortland won 49—7 over Alfred State for its seventh straight win. In other games, the Bills beat the Chiefs 28—21 on Sunday with Josh Allen scoring three touchdowns, the Giants lost 34—24 to the 49ers, Cornell hockey lost 2—1 on Friday and won 3—1 on Saturday with freshman Gio DiGiulian scoring in each game, and the Knicks beat the Bulls 128—116 with Jalen Brunson scoring 31 while the Syracuse Crunch won 4—0 over Utica then lost 7—4 to Belleville.  607 News Now
  • Ithaca College’s Association for Women in Sports Media partnered with Ithaca Volleyball on Oct. 29 to cover a breast cancer awareness game—an effort that featured an all-women crew and supported Dig Pink’s fundraising for breast cancer research.  The Ithacan
