COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cornell United Way campaign, launched on Sept 25, is supporting 60 local agencies that help residents with housing, jobs, and essential services. Ronnise Way of the Women’s Opportunity Center said the funds are vital amid local budget cuts & rising community needs.  Tompkins Weekly

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ithaca Area Economic Development has chosen Kurt Foreman, who currently leads the Delaware Prosperity Partnership, as its new president after a nationwide search—Foreman will start in January and aims to boost the local economy by helping businesses grow and create quality jobs in Tompkins County.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Ithaca City School District and the Ithaca Teachers Association reached a tentative three-year contract after eight months of talks that provides a 7% salary raise for this school year and next, with a 6% raise for 2027—28 and 12 weeks of paid leave for parental and medical reasons. The agreement still awaits approval from both the union and the Board of Education before it takes effect.  WENY
  • Cornell has launched a new four-year residency program in wildlife population health at the Cornell K. Lisa Yang Center for Wildlife Health—one of only three wildlife-focused veterinary residencies in North America approved by the American College of Zoological Medicine. Residents will train under board-certified mentors to gain practical experience with free-ranging native wildlife and prepare for board certification.  Cornell Chronicle
  • The Ithaca College Student Governance Council met on November 3 to confirm candidates for the Appropriations Committee and the Class of 2028 senator while discussing campus initiatives. The council began drafting legislation on AI use and student accommodations and will host Melanie Stein to speak on academics at its next meeting.  The Ithacan
  • Medical anthropologist Stacey Langwick, an associate professor at the College of Arts and Sciences, will deliver the Society for Humanities Invitational Lecture on Nov. 11 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the Guerlac Room at the A.D. White House—an event free and open to the public.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Newfield Central School District will host its second annual fall harvest dinner on Nov. 13 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Newfield High School cafeteria—featuring local foods from over a dozen regional farms and student-prepared dishes focused on root vegetables for its farm-to-school program.  Tompkins Weekly
  • Researchers from Cornell and Carnegie Mellon University developed a prototype knitting machine that creates solid 3D objects by adding stitches in any direction — using a 6x6 needle block to produce shapes like a C and a pyramid. They improved the design with 3D-printed parts and plan to boost its speed and reliability for potential medical applications in the future.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Professor Nathan Seiberg from the Institute for Advanced Study will deliver the 2025 Hans Bethe Lecture — What Happens at Shorter Distances— at 7:30 p.m. November 19 in Schwartz Auditorium, Rockefeller Hall. He will talk about string theory and show how scientists learn about very small and very large parts of nature — using ideas from math and physics— to explore new scientific insights.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Professor Scott Erickson from Ithaca College attended the European Conference on Knowledge Management in Lahti, Finland on Sept. 4 and 5—he coauthored and presented a paper on digital metrics for estimating knowledge assets and served as a judge for the conference awards.  The Ithacan
  • Ithaca College will host its annual Veterans Day Celebration on November 6 at noon in the Whalen Center at Ford Hall to honor the 250th anniversary of the Army, Navy, and Marines—dean emeritus Art Ostrander will MC along with guest speaker Kim Dunnick and Navy veteran student Brendan Holmes, and the event will be livestreamed on the college website.  607 News Now

  • Cornell’s Food Systems and Global Change group coordinated a Lancet Planetary Health special issue published November 3 that called for transforming food systems to support healthy diets and environmental sustainability—this issue offers recommendations for producers, consumers, and governments to address challenges like hunger, obesity, and food waste.  Cornell Chronicle
  • During Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Arnot and Cayuga Health offer free low-dose CT scans to catch lung cancer early—Dr. Michelle Malnoske explains that early detection is key because the disease spreads quickly. The screenings are for people aged 50 to 80 with a 20-pack-year smoking history and are covered by most major insurance plans.  607 News Now
