- ➤ Due to the federal shutdown that left about 7,300 local residents without SNAP benefits and many federal employees without pay, several Finger Lakes eateries are offering free or discounted meals to help community members in need — Nickel’s Pit BBQ served free meals on November 9, Scale House Brewery is serving pizzas today from 5 to 6 p.m., and GRAFT Wine + Cider Bar will offer roasted chicken on November 16. 14850

- ➤ A federal government shutdown has frozen HEAP applications, making it harder for over 1.5 million households to get help with their utility bills during winter — utilities like NYSEG, RG&E, Con Edison, National Grid, and Central Hudson are keeping customers enrolled in their energy assistance programs and urging those in financial hardship to reach out for alternative help. - ➤ Dryden Fiber held its groundbreaking ceremony on Oct. 27 at Caroline Town Hall to launch its project to bring high-speed internet to the town using an $11.6 million grant covering 2,711 households. Construction is underway with work on utility poles, a central office on Route 79—and home drop installations—to bring service by June. Ithaca.com
