COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Elmira-Corning and the Finger Lakes community foundation is preparing its sixth annual FLX Gives—the 24-hour online giving event set to start Thursday, November 13th at 6 p.m.—to help local nonprofits in Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties receive support. Last year, the event raised over $250,000 for 120 organizations.  WENY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Delta Air Lines and United Airlines canceled flights from Ithaca because FAA-ordered cuts began Friday due to an air traffic control staff shortage. Delta canceled all flights between Ithaca and JFK for today and Wednesday while United removed a flight pair between Ithaca and Washington Dulles on Wednesday — customers may change reservations without penalty.  14850

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Sciencenter in Ithaca got a fresh exterior paint job—its first in 30 years—last week to help protect the building from weather. The museum also unveiled a new water feature and optical illusion tunnels in its Science Park and earlier received nearly $1 million from the state for a geothermal project.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cornell Engineering announced a new partnership with the David M. Einhorn Center that will require every undergraduate to participate in hands-on projects addressing local community challenges. The initiative will invest $1 million over three years—integrating community engagement into courses and capstone projects to connect technical learning with real-world impact.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Cornell University announced on Nov. 7 that it reached an agreement with the federal government to restore over $250 million in research funding withheld since April—an agreement that requires a $30 million payment to close pending cases and a $30 million research investment in US agriculture over the next three years, reviving its long-standing federal research partnership.  Ithaca.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cornell researchers used advanced data analytics to map the environmental impact of AI data centers and found that by 2030 the expansion could emit 24-44 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and use up to 1,125 million cubic meters of water per year if unchecked - their roadmap calls for smart siting, faster grid decarbonization and improved efficiency to cut these impacts by up to 73% for carbon and 86% for water.  Cornell Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tompkins County Whole Health expanded its Brown Road office to accept more mental health patients from the community. The new space—offering easier parking than the downtown facility—is available to people of all ages.  607 News Now

  • Hunters are invited to enter the 'Show us Your Rack' photo contest by submitting a trophy shot from deer season for a chance to win a prize package including deer processing, tire alignment, expo tickets, a case of beer, boots, and a gift card—entries are accepted through participating station websites until December 8.  607 News Now

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ithaca College men’s swim and dive team has worked hard after finishing second for four years and now plans to win the Liberty League title—coach Mike Blakely-Armitage said the team is adding new talent including diver Kian Long, who earned top scores in early meets. They will face Rochester on November 22 then compete at the Ithaca Invitational as they aim to break the second-place streak.  The Ithacan
  • The Ithaca College women’s swimming and diving team is ready for its sixth Liberty League Championship Tournament and will face the RIT Tigers on November 22 as it works to earn a spot at regionals in December—coach Mike Blakely-Armitage said the team builds on past wins to keep its strong record. First-year diver Madison Morris and rising swimmers Sydney Koehler, Elizabeth Bodie, and Kathleen Papiernik are focused on strong meets and friendly rivalries that drive the team.  The Ithacan
