COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Visit Ithaca—an agency of the Tompkins Chamber—launched a Resident Sentiment Tourism Survey on November 19 to let Tompkins County residents share their views on tourism's effects on local life and help guide future development using a trusted TRAVELSAT index.  Tompkins County
  • Santa will appear at several holiday events in Cortland and Tompkins counties starting Nov 22—he will be at Cortland ReUse and a park tree lighting on Nov 28—and families will have chances to meet him for photos, treats, and community celebrations through mid-December—events include a downtown Ithaca holiday bash and seasonal gatherings at local venues. BUSINESS NEWS

  • Beginnings Credit Union held a ribbon cutting on Nov.12 at its Ithaca Commons branch at 202 E State St. to mark its rebrand from CFCU Community Credit Union to Beginnings. The event partnered with Tompkins Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Ithaca Alliance — and featured a Business After Hours dinner by Serendipity Catering that brought together members, employees, and local leaders.  Tompkins Weekly

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cornell’s Mann Library hosted the opening of Hello, Human! The Emerging Science of Plant Communication and Smart Agriculture, where researchers, students and campus partners showed how interactive systems let plants send signals—exhibits will run through March 2026.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Christine Lovely, Cornell's chief human resources officer, will leave the university on Dec. 15 to join UCLA as the new vice chancellor for campus human resources and chief people officer starting Dec. 18—Sean Moeller will serve as interim chief human resources officer.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Tompkins County Office for the Aging hosts a Family Caregiver Recognition Event from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 214 West State Street in Ithaca where Carly Nichols from Family and Children’s Services will present practical tips and grant gift bags+ raffles and refreshments to local caregivers.  607 News Now
  • Tompkins County will open the new Code Blue Shelter at the former Found on Cherry Street on November 24; the site will offer on-site showers, service animal accommodations + daytime warming, and Volunteers of America Upstate New York is preparing the facility to serve as a year-round shelter. The county purchased the parcel last year and shifted plans after a joint venture with the City of Ithaca did not work out.  607 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • The New York State Department of Health warned Ithaca residents that scammers posing as DOH employees are trying to gather personal information for controlled substance prescriptions—recipients are urged to report such calls to local law enforcement immediately.  607 News Now
  • Visitors to the Ithaca Sciencenter on November 15 from 2-5 p.m. may have been exposed to chickenpox, according to a health alert from Tompkins County Whole Health. Symptoms may take 10-20 days to appear, and those at high risk include unvaccinated infants, children, pregnant persons, and people with weakened immune systems.  14850
  • COVID case counts stayed stable and low in the Ithaca area while flu cases remained minimal. The Sleep Cycle app showed high cough levels that might indicate a rise in respiratory illnesses — local health officials are monitoring trends as cold weather sets in.  14850

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ithaca College volleyball team won their fourth Liberty League title on Nov. 15 and begins its NCAA Division III championship run today against Plymouth State University Panthers—carrying a 0.867 win rate from an 18-game streak. Head coach Tara Stilwell said the team is focused on winning its first national title—after a season marked by key wins and strong teamwork.  The Ithacan
