- ➤ The Ithaca Times highlights five local nonprofits for Giving Tuesday on Dec. 3 and urges Ithacans to donate to groups that help meet community needs. - ➤ REEgen (a Cornell spinout focused on rare earth recovery) won the $150,000 grand prize at the 2025 FuzeHub Commercialization Competition held at the New York State Innovation Summit (Oct. 29-30). The company will use the funding to improve its prototype and begin commercial production as early as mid-2026. Cornell Chronicle

- ➤ The History Center in Tompkins County is seeking candidates with a passion for local history to join its Board of Trustees and help oversee exhibit development and financial operations—applications for trustee roles are due by February 1. The county is also accepting candidates for the historian post, with applications due by December 1. 607 News Now
- ➤ The Downtown Ithaca Alliance has opened performer applications for local 2026 events including the Beginnings Summer Concert Series, Apple Harvest Festival, Winter Holiday Bash, and sidewalk showcases + street performance and busking opportunities. Applicants submitting by January 5th will be reviewed as selections are made by March 1st for the summer series + by May 1st for the harvest and holiday events. 14850

- ➤ Professor emerita Stephanie Vaughn died on November 12 in Ithaca. She taught creative writing and literature at Cornell for 39 years — her work influenced a generation of writers. Cornell Chronicle
- ➤ Legal scholar Gail Heriot will explore the unintended outcomes of the Civil Rights Act of 1991 in a talk titled 'Why We Walk on Eggshells' on Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in Statler Hall room 198+ Michael Fontaine will introduce her and lead a Q&A during the free event that is also streamed online. - ➤ Postdoctoral scientist Lanxi Hu was awarded the 2025 Fleming Fellowship by the Weill Institute for Cell and Molecular Biology — a three-year grant for her research on how plants keep their shape when they face stress. Her work with Arabidopsis may lead to new ideas in science and building design — research that could change our understanding of nature. Cornell Chronicle
- ➤ Gorillabots Robotics Team 5485, made up of students from Elmira, Corning, and Horseheads, was honored with a New York State resolution after winning the NY EX FIRST Tech Challenge Region Championship in March and placing first in their division at the world championship in April. State Senator Tom O'Mara — along with Assemblymembers Phil Palmesano and Chris Friend — presented the resolution to recognize their hard work and success. WENY

- ➤ The Virgil Planning Board will review a site plan from Hollenbeck’s Cider Mill to add a walk-in freezer and a permit request from Dryden Fiber to install fiber cables along Walker Road at 7 p.m. tonight at Virgil Town Hall — both proposals will be discussed at the meeting. 607 News Now
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Cayuga Health announced its new Street Medicine Access Residency Training Initiative—funded by a $2.5 million grant—to train medical residents to provide compassionate care for homeless individuals and those with substance use and mental health challenges. The five-year program will invest $500,000 annually and partner with local groups like REACH Medical and OAR of Tompkins County. 607 News Now
