- ➤ Village Grove in Trumansburg near Ithaca is an affordable housing community built with sustainable design that earned Passive House and NetZero certifications using geothermal and solar systems to lower energy use by 80 percent. The project won Upstate Project of the Year from the New York State Association for Affordable Housing and serves as a model for blending energy efficiency with housing affordability. Tompkins Weekly
- ➤ St. Catherine Greek Orthodox Church in Downtown Ithaca is holding its annual Christmas Bake Sale; online orders will be accepted until 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 28. Pickup is scheduled for 4–6 p.m. on December 19 and 12–2 p.m. on December 20—orders include traditional treats like baklava and donations support the church’s charitable work through the Philoptochos Society. 14850

- ➤ For the past month, classrooms in Roy H. Park Hall have suffered extreme heat with temperatures reaching 90 degrees because a faulty fan in the duct work allowed excess boiler heat to remain in the rooms—professors moved classes to cooler spaces until repairs are expected after Thanksgiving break. - ➤ The second annual Cornell Systems Summit took place Nov. 2–4 at Cornell in Ithaca where experts talked about systems engineering in sustainability, health care, and computer chip making—students displayed robotics projects and panelists discussed new skills needed as AI changes the field. - ➤ Ithaca’s Environmental Health Research Group released documents showing toxic chemicals including PCBs and heavy metals in Coldbrook Creek and on Notre Dame High School grounds — contamination first noted over 40 years ago with little remedial action taken. - ➤ Local naturalization ceremonies in Broome and Tompkins counties were canceled last week because the counties did not meet statutory requirements — local offices said they were not asked to make changes. Congressman Mike Lawler said he secured a reversal for ceremonies in other counties, but regional officials remain unsure when local ceremonies will resume — USCIS has not confirmed further details.
