COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cornell held its 15th Town-Gown Awards on Dec. 6 at Cinemapolis, honoring the Community Housing Development Fund + the Child Care Growth Initiative; the groups have built over 1,030 affordable homes and created 150 child care slots to support local families.  Tompkins Weekly
  • Ithaca College’s WICB 91.7 FM has built community bonds for eight decades — featuring modern rock and specialty shows broadcast by student DJs at the Roy H. Park School of Communications. Local listeners call in daily and alumni events honor the station's rich legacy.  The Ithacan

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cornell is building a hemp processing hub at its AgriTech campus in Geneva, funded by a $5 million investment, that will allow local firms and farmers to develop new hemp-based building materials + a Dec. 9 conference showed strong support, and the facility is set for completion by early 2029.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Professor Chris Anderson from Cornell’s Nolan School explained that pricing algorithms use real-time data to set rates, which may run into antitrust issues+ he urged companies to strengthen controls on data sharing+ to prevent unintentional price fixing.  Cornell Chronicle

  • The Winter Artisan Market returned on Dec. 6 showcasing crafts, live music + local vendors where residents shopped for holiday gifts to support small businesses.  The Ithacan

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Brooks School will launch DC Start this fall (with 43 first-year scholars) to offer immersive policy courses and internships in Washington’s Dupont Circle. Upper-level students will join DC Connect next spring and summer for enhanced support and hands-on learning.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Julia Beitel, a Milstein scholar, is studying for her master’s in Design Technology at Cornell Tech, where she works on projects that mix design, sustainability, and tech. Her early fieldwork (aquaponics research in the Bahamas) led her to a fresh approach in design and innovation.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On December 10, the Ithaca Fire Department rescued a deer stuck on ice at Cayuga Lake inlet near Cass Park (the animal was cold but unharmed) in a joint effort with DEC and Park Police.  607 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam visited downtown Ithaca's Handwork Gallery Thursday, purchasing local art while under heavy law enforcement protection. His working visit ran Dec. 4 to 10 (his son attends Cornell) and he also attended policy events at MIT and the Federal Reserve.  The Ithaca Voice
  • Cayuga Medical Center faced labor law charges after the Communications Workers of America filed a complaint Dec. 8 with the National Labor Relations Board over an anti union meeting and poor staffing conditions, which led over 250 nurses to form Cayuga United+CWA in Ithaca.  607 News Now

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nurses at Cayuga Medical Center are pushing to unionize as they point to two years without cost of living adjustments, phased-out pension plans, and staffing shortages. Their renewed efforts come after a previous attempt a decade ago and amid changes in hospital management under a larger regional group.  The Ithaca Voice

  • Emma Waite ’25 joined the Bombers in 2024 for her final year at Ithaca College and now serves as the women’s basketball team’s graduate assistant coach, using record-setting experience from RIT and leadership skills to guide former teammates — a key new chapter in her sports career.  The Ithacan
  • The Ithaca College men’s swim and dive team added sophomore Ignacio Fernandez-Manzano and rower Andrew Cheely as divers + to boost their Liberty League championship bid this fall while working with senior diver Kian Long and coach Chris Griffin.  The Ithacan
