EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cornell professor Esra Akcan released a new book that examines how architecture causes harm + can foster healing in conflicted or disaster-prone places. The book calls for accountability and explores ways to repair both social and environmental damage in the aftermath of internal violence.  Cornell Chronicle
  • Tompkins Cortland Community College signed a transfer agreement with Hobart and William Smith Colleges on Thursday, Dec. 18 at its Dryden campus – guaranteeing graduates with a 3.0 GPA or higher full junior status and a scholarship of at least $30,500.  607 News Now
  • Research from the ILR School shows that individual transfers or moves from different teams boost productivity, but group transfers from the same unit do not; the study based on three years of Fortune 500 data recommends that managers diversify transfers and provide onboarding for group moves.  Cornell Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Ithaca Teachers Association expressed full support on Friday for nurses at Cayuga Medical Center seeking to unionize with Cayuga United+CWA. The group urged hospital management to start open bargaining for safer staffing and fair wages.  14850

HEALTH NEWS

  • Cornell researchers found that promoter-proximal pausing evolved from short signals in simple cells to longer, regulated stops in animals due to NELF proteins. The study, conducted with Memorial Sloan Kettering, shows that disruptions in this process may weaken heat shock responses and link to diseases.  Cornell Chronicle

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • New York’s Southern Zone will host a late deer season for archers and muzzleloader hunters from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1. Fewer deer and hunters will make the holiday hunt more challenging, so experts advise using tactics like snow camouflage — a proven method in quieter woods.  Ithaca Journal
