In this class, adult students (ages 16+) can learn and put into practice the building blocks of acting. Together, we’ll tackle a script chosen specifically to meet the group’s needs and learn about script analysis, building a character, making choices in a scene, and concepts like intention, action, and tactics. We will ultimately put these skills into practice in a staged reading that friends and family can attend. Whether you’re a lifelong theatre lover, eager to unleash your creative side, or just looking for a fun way to connect with others, this class is for you.

Instructor Shirley Serotsky shares more about the class and what inspired her to offer it.
What inspired you to offer this class?
I’ve had the opportunity to teach people from age 4 to 84 about theater, and what a pleasure this has been! One summer in DC, I went from teaching preschool classes one month to a class specifically for seniors the next. I love that anyone can enter the world of theatre-making at any stage of life.
What are the “fundamentals of acting”?
You have to take the class to find out! No, really—we’ll cover the basic principles essential to acting and script analysis. This includes the concepts of intention, tactics, beats, objectives, and, at the heart of it all: What does my character want, and what are they doing to get it? Together, we’ll apply these concepts to a script.
Who should take this class?
Anyone who wants to try their hand at text-based acting, expand their toolbox as an actor, or practice in a comfortable, supportive space is welcome. I believe wholeheartedly (and I say this to the college students I teach—likely more often than they want to hear) that the craft of acting and making theater is a lifelong pursuit. We are all students, all the time.
