About this event

Ithaca College African Drumming and Dance Ensemble

Thursday, November 19, 2026

7PM | Ford Hall

The African Drumming and Dance Ensemble will be joined by the first-year seminar class to perform several pieces from West Africa, mainly Ghana. Students have been learning about the traditional music and cultural practices of several Ghanaian ethnic groups, including the Ewe, Ga, Ashanti, and Dagomba.

Through this experience, students are learning to process and perform music orally, embracing the traditional methods through which these musical practices have been passed down from generation to generation. Just as importantly, they are developing a deeper respect and appreciation for the musicians, cultural practitioners, and ancestors whose musical legacies have been preserved and shared with others across the world.

We offer our heartfelt gratitude to those ancestors who have made it possible for us to learn from, experience, and celebrate these rich musical traditions. To them, we say, “Ahsay!”
