  • Discover Cayuga Lake announced a new boat to replace MV Teal and invites the community to name it by donating $500 by April 15. The nonprofit will launch the vessel with events on May 15 at Allen H. Treman Marina State Park — on May 18 at the Farmers Market.  The Ithaca Voice
  • A GoFundMe was launched to help the family of Katherine Gray, Christy Oralls, and their 3-year-old daughter Paisley Wood following a fatal April 1 house fire in Dryden, where high winds sped the blaze; the campaign aims to raise $13,000 for temporary housing, medical bills, and funeral expenses.  607 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Researchers at Cornell University have developed a genetic toolkit based on CRISPR gene editing that allows study of fruit fly cells+ the system, an expansion of the MAGIC method, is now available through community repositories to speed up gene discovery.  Cornell Chronicle

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at Cornell modeled how gene drives to control weeds work, finding that seed banks (underground reservoirs of dormant seeds) slow the spread of engineered changes, suggesting that these seed banks may also serve as a natural safety buffer.
