“Preparing students for a quantum future”
The rapid growth of quantum technologies has elevated quantum physics concepts such as superposition and entanglement into the national spotlight. Innovation in quantum technologies requires interdisciplinary teams, and the commercialization of quantum products (computers, sensors, networks) expands the relevance of quantum ideas even further. In light of these developments, how should higher education respond? Is there a need for quantum-specific degree programs? What kinds of new courses or experiences should be developed? I will share insights from a collaborative project between RIT and University of Colorado Boulder that has been examining the US landscape of quantum-related education and career opportunities as well as the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to succeed in quantum-related careers. Our team has reviewed course offerings from over 1,400 institutions, interviewed 75 managers and employees in the quantum industry, and is conducting an on-going analysis of thousands of quantum-related job postings. This talk will holistically consider these insights to identify ways that educators and students can contribute to this growing and changing field.
